Why do people have trouble breathing?

There are many causes of nasal obstruction such as a deviated septum, turbinate swelling and allergies.  One problem that is sometimes overlooked is nasal valve collapse.

What is nasal valve collapse?

The internal nasal valve is the narrowest part of the nose.  It is a triangle that is made up of the septum, turbinate and side wall.  Nasal valve collapse is when the side wall collapses with breathing in.  Think of it as a floppy side of a tent. Many patients with nasal valve collapse benefit from breath rite strips or with holding their side of their nose out toward their cheek.

What can be done to help this?

Latera is an implantable device that helps stabilize the nasal cartilage to improve breathing which was FDA approved in 2016.  It can be performed in the office under local anesthesia or in the operating room under general anesthesia with mild bruising and inflammation.

Is it effective?

90% of patients were satisfied with their breathing after the procedure. In a 2 year study, patients noted a 57% reduction in their nasal obstruction symptoms.

Will it change the shape of my nose?

There is usually no change to the appearance of the nose and all patients were satisfied with their appearance after the procedure.

Is the procedure safe?

Studies show that 90% of patients are satisfied with the procedure, risks include mild pain or irritation from the implant, infection, reaction to the material and need for implant removal.

Where can I get this done?

Dr Golgert was the first ENT doctor in Santa Barbara to perform this procedure in the office.
